Egbelade Omitonade Ifawemimo, an Iyamoja worshipper

This is a juxtaposed photo of Egbelade Omitonade Ifawemimo, a 22 year old student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife studying Economics. Despite her exposure and education, she strongly adheres to the Yoruba religion She is an Iyamoja worshipper and a traditionalist, she was born into Yoruba religion as her father is an Iyemoja priest, she decided to follow suit. Nowadays Yoruba people despise our traditional religion with a passion which has made the case of Iyalorisa Egbelade interesting, to understand that she is only 22 and in her prime and that she’s well determined to defy societal ‘religious’ norms makes it even more fascinating. Her passion for her religion has been recognised as she was recently interviewed by Nigerian Tribune and has made her to meet a lot of people from her school of thought Being an Iyemoja worshipper, Iyalorisa Egbelade doesn’t eat fish and pawpaw and she includes white clothing in her dress at all times. She insists nothing would make her abandon her religion, absolutely nothing! You would agree with us that our ancestors were Yoruba religion worshippers but the efforts of Henry Townsend, Thomas Birch Freeman et al (British Missionaries) established Christianity in Yorubaland and Northern Africans, Hausas, and 15th century’s Malian Empire traders who visited Oyo-Ile frequently for trade slowly filtered Islam into yorubaland. About 90% of contemporary Yoruba follows either Christianity or Islam and detests traditional Yoruba religion.
